Lenten Devotional Guide 2008 |
|||
We at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church find ourselves in a truly significant season and you are a vital part of embodying and furthering Christ’s purposes and our future. As our new vision statement reminds us, God has called us to be relevant servant leaders. Therefore, this devotional guide is not the creation of one staff member or pastor or officer, but is a compilation of meditations and reflections that stem from the ministries and lives of servant leaders within the congregation. To honor our bicentennial, we have also sprinkled in some reflections from former FAPC pastors. At the end of Week 6 you’ll find information on how you can "Walk the Talk" and serve at FAPC along with a list of FAPC's service organizations. On March the 16th, Palm Sunday, the entire congregation will be encouraged to come forward and make a fresh commitment to serve God through one or more of these ministries. We hope this devotional will inspire you to take another step in service, as throughout these forty days we ponder our humanity and God’s amazing love.You can also download and/or print the devotional guide.
A Daily Devotional for Lent ABOUT LENT Lent is a forty-day period which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. We skip Sundays when we count the forty days, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection. In 2008, Lent begins on February the 6th and ends on March the 22nd. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing Lent, the individual Christian is also imitating Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. The liturgical color for lent is purple, the color of penitence as well as royalty, preparation for the coming of the resurrected King.
