Advocates
for Peace and Justice offers programming and facilitates advocacy on
peace and justice issues. The group works closely with the Washington
office of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and with the Presbyterian United
Nations office to make available denominational materials on positions
regarding issues in church and society.
The group equips the congregation for peacemaking through study, discussion,
and participation in peacemaking ministry projects of New York City Presbytery,
General Assembly, and ecumenical organizations.
Formerly
known as "The Peacemakers," the group has been active in Fifth
Avenue Presbyterian Church since 1979 and the founding of the Peacemaking
Commission by the Session. In 1983, the Session signed the General Assembly
COMMITMENT TO PEACEMAKING, pledging to integrate peace and justice issues
into the life and work of FAPC.
Over the
years, the group has been involved in a broad range of issues - from
nuclear
disarmament to undoing racism. Members have worked to promote understanding
of diverse cultures and religions, and wise stewardship of God's creation.
They have worked to ban land mines and to reform criminal justice.
They have sponsored Bible studies and political rallies, and they have
traveled
to every part of the globe."So many of us seek to live out our
faith, and working with this wonderful group provides a structure
in which to
do that," says Lynda Selde of Advocates for Peace and Justice.
