Community Life

Come to Jamaica!

Fifth Avenue members and friends are invited to spend an evening with our neighbors at First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, Queens.

Our two congregations came together in February for the screening and discussion of the documentary film, Emanuel, in February. Our friends have planned a fascinating evening for us as a generous return of our hospitality.

For 350 years, First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica has worshiped and served in the same community in Queens. Organized in 1662, the church is the oldest continuously serving Presbyterian congregation in the United States. It is located in the heart of Jamaica, a neighborhood that was once a combination of farms and woodland and is now a wonderful mixture of residential and commercial properties. With the influx of immigrants from around the world, Jamaica’s population has evolved from homogeneously white to an amalgamation of cultures and nationalities.

This event is an opportunity to learn how this thriving congregation has participated in the revival of Jamaica, and to witness the exciting ministries underway there. The evening will include a conversation about urban ministry in our two New York City neighborhoods, a tour of the new Tree of Life Center, and time for refreshment and fellowship. The Tree of Life Center is an outreach program to economically empower Jamaica and help make residents self-sufficient. Programs include GED, ESL and SAT preparation, financial literacy and job readiness classes, and hunger relief.

Public transportation is the easiest way to get to the church. Visit the Metropolitan Transit Authority website to determine the best subway, bus or rail option to the church’s address, 89-60 164th St., Jamaica, Queens 11432. You might also consider a taxi, Uber or similar alternative. If transportation is difficult for you and might prevent your attending, please let us know. Contact Stephanie Kelley in the senior pastor’s office ([email protected], 212.247.0490 ext 3000).

We are hoping for a strong turnout for this unique event! Please RSVP to Stephanie and let us know you will be there!
