Registration Opens for Don’t Walk By
Registration is open for Don’t Walk By, the annual “search and rescue” mission on behalf of New York City’s homeless population.
Over four Saturdays in February, more than 1,000 Don’t Walk By volunteers will walk every street in Manhattan, offering food, warm clothing, a blanket, and an opportunity to get off the streets and into a shelter or residential program. On the third Saturday (Feb. 16), Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church will serve as the anchor church for East Side outreach. Don’t Walk By will set up in the LaDane Williamson Christian Education Center to offer hot meals, basic medical care and resource referrals to homeless individuals from the city’s East Side.
Don’t Walk By is looking for volunteers to serve on street engagement and subway engagement teams, as hospitality staff at anchor churches, and as team leaders. Medical professionals and volunteers who can provide transportation are also needed.
Volunteers may sign up individually, or as part of a church group, community group or group of friends. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Team leaders and transportation providers must be at least 21 years old.

“Whether you want to volunteer on Feb. 17 or on another Saturday, it is best to sign up on the Don’t Walk By website, rather than through the church,” says Seamus Campbell, director of Outreach Ministries. “This is a wonderful opportunity to serve with fellow volunteers from the church. We hope that any of our community groups interested in doing a service project together will consider Don’t Walk By.”
