Black Theology: James Cone and Biblical Revelation

  • Audio for this sermon will be available on Monday.

The revelation of God in Christ as liberator of the oppressed—this is what James Cone, the founder of Black liberation theology, considered the essential starting point for the faithful interpretation of Scripture. Christians are called to join in solidarity with the struggle of the dispossessed, for liberation is not an afterthought to God—it is the essence of divine activity. Our instructor, the Rev. Dr. Andrea C. White, is the associate professor of theology and culture at Union Theological Seminary in New York. She has served as executive director of the Society for the Study of Black Religion and chair of the Black theology unit of the American Academy of Religion.
